Kansas City’s cocktail scene has been steadily growing since the early 2010’s. Ironically, the bar that started it all and was recognized nationally (Manifesto) is no longer in operation. While Manifesto is no longer with us, it laid the foundation for great things to come. As people who always find time to grab a nice cocktail or two while on vacation, we frequently end up with the same conclusion. Kansas City is home to our favorite bars.

Swordfish Tom’s - Crossroads KC

This cocktail bar is for those of us who enjoy some peace and quiet while sipping on spirit-forward cocktails. Located in the basement of an old building in the Crossroads, Swordfish Tom’s feels like a true speakeasy without relying on a goofy password or secret entrance (though you do need to look a little harder for the entrance than the typical bar). It’s simply a cool, rustic space where you can enjoy some of the most unique libations in the city. Don’t confuse the rules (no talking on cell phones, cash only) with pretentiousness. Just accept that this cocktail bar is for people who enjoy the drinks and good conversation.

Drastic Measures - Downtown Shawnee, KS

Drastic Measures feels like the younger cousin of Swordfish Tom’s. If you enjoy the drinks at Swordfish, you’ll likely enjoy the drinks at Drastic Measures. Drastic features similarly spirit forward cocktails but with a slightly more lively atmosphere as well as some very cool themes throughout the year. Drastic has been recognized multiple times by James Beard and for good reason. If we could only visit one cocktail bar the rest of our lives, it might be Drastic Measures.

Wild Child - Downtown Shawnee, KS

From the great people behind Drastic Measures, Wild Child burst onto the scene in 2023. Part of the idea behind Wild Child was to bring some unique low-ABV and no-ABV cocktail options to the KC Metro. The drinks here often have a snazzy presentation and are more likely to be loved equally by cocktail snobs and newbies alike. An added bonus is they take reservations whereas Drastic Measures does not.

The Monarch Bar - Country Club Plaza

We’ll be honest, the Monarch Bar is not exactly our scene. This cocktail bar feels more like a see and be seen establishment where you’re likely to find influencers. That said, the service is always excellent and the wide array of cocktail options keep us coming back year after year. To stay true to desire for a more quiet experience where conversation is easy, we like to hit up the Monarch Bar for pre-dinner cocktails. If you fancy a more lively atmosphere that will give you some great people watching opportunities, go ahead and visit after dinner on the Plaza.

The Mercury Room - Crossroads KC

The Mercury Room is the destination for a special occasion. Here you’ll find a cocktail experience which makes you think you’re in a bigger city. The views can’t be beat and the cocktails are remarkable. Even better, the bar is located several floors directly above the next bar on our list, Jade Jaguar.

Jade Jaguar - Crossroads KC

Jade Jaguar is more evidence that Kansas City is branching out in exciting ways. The bar aims to replicate the high energy of a bar in Mexico City and features some great cocktails featuring agave spirits and Mexican flavors. You’ll also find a decent selection of food from bar bites all the way up to a Sonoran Smash Burger.

The Brass Monkey - Downtown KC

This bar has an art-deco aesthetic we fell in love with during our first visit. The bar has a wide range of cocktails, including plenty of the classics and some unique creations. If you’re having trouble deciding, you can always opt for the “Alchemist Experience” where you’ll draw two cards that guide the creation of a bespoke cocktail.
