Best Time to Visit Acadia National Park: A Season-by-Season Guide

Acadia National Park was at the top of our list for must see national parks. Located along Maine’s coastline with dramatic ocean views, killer hikes and serene lakes there’s a lot to love. 

We wanted to visit the Northeast especially during peak fall foliage season, so this was the perfect opportunity to visit Acadia/Bar Harbor along with Boston and Portland, Maine. 

As with any national park, picking the right time to visit can make or break your trip. There are many things you want to consider including weather, crowds, budget, and closures. Luckily, we feel we picked the best time of year to visit. Honestly, fall is the time to go. We did a lot of research to plan our trip perfectly and while it’s difficult to get the timing exactly right, we overall thought it ended up being a perfect trip.

Spring (April–May)

Spring can be a good time to visit if you are on a budget and/or want to avoid crowds. Lodging in Bar Harbor can get pricey, but in spring prices are drastically cheaper. 

Due to the unpredictability of the spring weather it can be great or it can be iffy. Most of Park Loop Road is closed until about mid-April. With melting snow, you might encounter a lot of muddy trails and colder weather. 

If you are going to visit in Spring, late May could be a great time to visit just before the summer crowds ramp up. You’ll have pleasant temperatures and start seeing wildflowers and trees budding.

Summer (June–August)

Acadia National Park is beautiful in the summer. However, summer is always the toughest time to visit national parks when it comes to crowds and Acadia is no different. With the summer weather kids are out of school and families are taking their summer vacations.

Of course weather wise, summer is a perfect time to be in Maine. The weather tends to be perfect with highs averaging in the mid-70s, so you can escape the heat of your hometown (if you are like us in the Midwest experiencing scorching days). Those 70 degree days will be a nice reprieve while still enjoying a warm day in the park. You also have a decreased chance of rain during these months as well.

Parking can and will be a nightmare here in summer. Acadia doesn’t have a wealth of parking to begin with and add in summer crowds, it’s going to be rough. You will have to get up super early to find parking at many of the popular trailheads. Places along Ocean Path only have street parking and small lots and other trails throughout the park have fairly small lots as well. 

The days will be longer though and it will likely be better to go hike early before the heat anyways. There is so much to do during the summer, you can even do a bit of swimming at Sand Beach and Echo Lake Beach (although it will still be cold even in the summer!). 

Since it is so busy, prices during the summer are pretty high for hotels and lodging as well as food. Hello market price lobster rolls! 

If you are interested in going on a whale watching excursion then summer is your best time to go. July and August are the peak months to see whales including humpbacks, finbacks and minkes.

Fall (September–October)

The ultimate time to visit. You won’t have the peak crowds of summer in fall. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s still going to be busy especially if you visit on a weekend, but we were pleasantly surprised with the crowd levels on the weekdays during early October. 

I meticulously planned our trip to try to time it with peak fall foliage, but that is game that is difficult to win. You don’t want to guess when peak foliage is going to be and then miss it. Ultimately, we decided to go a bit earlier than we thought peak was going to be. In our opinion, it’s better to have mixed fall foliage than get there with mostly empty trees. We were there the first full week of October and it ended up falling in the “moderate” fall foliage. It was gorgeous. Peak ended up being the week of October 15, so we were about a week shy. 

Some years lean towards early October and some towards the end of October, so your best bet will be early to mid-October. For 2026, peak foliage is expected sometime between October 8-18. 

The other thing we love about visiting Acadia in the fall is the weather. Your hikes will be much more pleasant with a cool autumn crisp in the air. The warm weather seems to be trending later and later into fall, so even when we were there it was warmer than expected. You’ll likely have cool mornings to start off your hikes and get warmer as the days go on, but it won’t be too warm like in summer. 

Interested in seeing the sunrise? You can claim being the first to see the sunrise in the United States on Cadillac Mountain typically from early October to late November. It’s still one of the first places to see the sunrise in other times of the year, but this period of fall is the first! It’s likely easier to score Cadillac Mountain reservations vs the summer too. 

Prices can be high in fall just like in summer. As far as vacations go, we couldn’t find any hotels that weren’t above what we typically average for a hotel. But, the experience we had was worth every extra cent. 

The other con I have for this season is it tends to be the rainiest part of the year, especially October. September tends to have some of the clearer skies though! We got lucky and only had one day of rain and still found ways to enjoy the park, so it’s definitely not a deal breaker but there are a lot of hikes to avoid in the park if it is raining as it can get quite slick and dangerous.

Winter (November–March)

Winter really is probably the worst time to visit. Many of the services in the park shut down including many of the hotels and lodging in Bar Harbor. 

Like I mentioned before, the weather seems to be trending warmer and warmer, so you may be able to enjoy some great November weather days here! You never know, but along with October it tends to be one of the rainiest months for Bar Harbor.

From December 1-April 14 most of Park Loop Road is closed except for short sections along Ocean Path and Jordan Pond Road. 

If you are up for it, it can be a beautiful experience with few visitors who are mostly locals. If there is snow, you can do activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on Acadia’s many carriage roads.

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t guessed by now, our recommendation is definitely visit Acadia during the fall! We are already dreaming of going back to Acadia and don’t have any plans to deviate from visiting during that season. Scenic drives down Park Loop Road, surrounded by gorgeous fall colors and crisp autumn days just can’t be beat. The crowds were manageable and everything is still open and bustling.

If you can only visit in the summer though, don’t despair. It is still beautiful and is an excellent time to visit. You just need to plan your days to avoid the crowds as best you can.
