Kansas City Barbecue
Q39
This place opened with the goal of serving competition barbecue to the masses in the early 2010s. They’ve delivered and become the go-to barbecue joint if you’re in the mood for something more refined. You’re not going to get any great deals here or giant portions, but you’ll get arguably the best brisket, smoked wings and sides of any barbecue restaurant in the city.
Char Bar
This multi-faceted restaurant serving up “smoked meats and amusements” opened up around the same time as Q39 and quickly became a Kansas City staple. What sets Char Bar apart is the creativity and atmosphere. At Char Bar, you’ll want to linger a little longer and enjoy yard games, cocktails and a great beer selection.
Chef J
The newest entry on our list is Chef J. This no frills operation in the West Bottoms focuses on classic barbecued meats and sides and has fewer of the unique barbecue inspired dishes you’ll see at Q39 and Char Bar. Get there early because there’s consistently a line at the door waiting for their 11AM opening time. The meat that truly shines at Chef J is the burnt end.
Joe’s Kansas City
Joe’s is one of the most popular BBQ destinations in Kansas City and for good reason. What started out of gas station is now a bustling restaurant serving up the usual barbecue fare. What sets it apart? The Z-Man sandwich. Brisket, provolone, and onion rings. What more could you want? Don’t be deterred by the line snaking out the door, they move fast and so does the line.
Jack Stack Barbecue
Another Kansas City staple, Jack Stack does not disappoint. If you are looking for a nicer sit-down restaurant this is the place to be. The location in the Crossroads especially has a great atmosphere.
