Cheeseburger and french fries from The Campground in Kansas City

Kansas City Burgers & Sandwiches

The Campground

If you are looking for a fancy smashburger, this is the place to get it. They’ve got a small menu with other delicious eats, but we have a hard time not getting the burger. You also won’t know whether this place is a restaurant or cocktail bar first as they do both phenomenally.

Cosmo Burger

What started as a ghost kitchen in Dodson’s bar in Waldo now has expanded to a brick and mortar in the Crossroads. Serving up greasy, straight forward smashburgers and tots, you won’t need anything else.

Bay Boy Sandwiches

Dutch crunch roll. It’s something we didn’t know existed until we first tried out this small sandwich shop. The crunch roll is so good, we typically purchase a couple along with our sandwiches in case we want to make our own sandwich at home. This small sandwich shop serves a variety of sandwiches - there is truly something for everyone.

The Russell

The vibe of this place is hard to beat. It’s that rare lunch spot that keeps it casual while also managing to have the feel of a fancy date night spot. When eating here, you’ll have full view of an open flame where much of the cooking takes place. The menu is limited but when one of those options if the Steak Chimi sandwich, it’s hard to complain.

King G

You’ll find a great assortment of sandwiches with high quality ingredients at King G. The sandwiches are more casual and portable than what you might find at Mildred’s or the Russel, making it a great carry out option. If you decide to just skip work in the afternoon, you have the option to pop over to the King G bar for craft cocktails.

Town Topic

Town Topic is the original. Its burgers, fries, onion rings and more have stood the test of time. The burgers are basic diner burgers but always hit the spot. Town Topic’s history goes way back to a time when you’d most likely take a street car to get there. In order to make sure both early and late diners had their fill, Town Topics were placed both on the northbound and southbound streetcar line. Both locations are open during the morning hours but if you’re craving a midnight meal, be sure to head to their location on Broadway.

The Peanut

Kansas City’s oldest bar and grill and served as a speakeasy during Prohibition. With locations all over the city, they are a beloved Kansas City establishment. The place serves up standard bar fare but you would be remiss not to order the BLT or city favorite Buffalo Wings.

Hi-Dive Lounge

Truly a dive bar. You will think there is no way the food will be very good, but you’d be wrong. The food has no right to be this good. Delicious burgers, BLTs, tacos, you really can’t go wrong. You should also try your luck while you’re here and order a mystery beer from the beer can machine.
